How do I (easily) make my house more sustainable?

Making your home more sustainable has many benefits. In addition to more stable and lower housing costs and that it is good for the environment, you also create a healthier and more comfortable indoor climate.

Efficient ways to make your home more sustainable can be found in tip 3. Before you start, it is wise to first follow tip 2. An energy label indicates how energy-efficient your home is. The label makes it clear which energy-saving measures are possible. However, these sustainable solutions often come with a price.

So let’s start with a low-threshold and accessible sustainable (saving) tip:

Tip 1: Save on your energy consumption

Do not leave lights on unnecessarily, switch off electrical appliances (not in Stand-By mode) or turn the heating down one degree. These standard measures to reduce your energy consumption are effective, but everyone is now familiar with them.

An efficient and smart solution is ‘tado+’. With tado+ you control the climate in your home. Effortless and without high costs.

Tip 2: Arrange an energy label for your house

Before you can start making your house more sustainable, you need an energy label. This way you know exactly in which area energy-saving measures are possible. Check carefully whether you already have one, because since 2015, a house must have a valid energy label when it is sold or rented out.

An energy label indicates how energy-efficient your home is. You can easily request this document below and then receive it as a (PDF) document. The label classes run from A to G. A home with an A label is the most energy efficient and a home with a G label is the least energy efficient. The label also provides an overview of housing characteristics, such as the housing type, insulation, glazing and heating.

Tip 3: Start with sustainability (step by step)

For sustainable solutions you often pay significant one-off investment costs. This is one reason that stops many people. Very understandable of course, but the other side of the coin is that you will earn back this investment over the years. In the long run, it is indeed cheaper (see examples below).

Would you rather opt for a one-time investment that is a bit lower and pays for itself faster? See example 1. Or do you prefer to invest a little more once, so that your savings per year are also a lot higher? See example 2.

Example 1:

Cost of insulating floor: €1,400
Savings per year: €160,-
Payback period: 8 years and 9 months

Example 2:

Cost of solar panels: € 4,500
Savings per year: €450,-
Payback period: 10 years

The sustainable options at a glance:

  • Insulate walls
  • Insulating floors and roof
  • Solar panels
  • Heat pump
  • HR++ Glass
